What Site Prep Is
Before any building goes up, the ground underneath has to be right. Site preparation — sometimes just called grading — is the process of getting your land ready for whatever comes next. That usually means leveling, shaping, compacting, and making sure the site is set up to drain well and support what’s going to be built on it.
We handle site prep for homeowners, builders, and property owners across South Georgia.
Why Wright Way for Site Prep
A bad pad shows up months later as a cracked slab or a building that settles wrong — which is why coordinating exactly with your builder’s spec, and being there on the day we say we will, both matter on this job. When Stan and Dawson Wright started this business, they kept hearing the same complaint from South Georgia landowners: crews that quoted a job, promised a date, and never showed up. Wright Way was built around the opposite — if Dawson schedules your estimate or your start date, he’s there.
Who Needs It
Site prep is usually part of a larger build. You might need it if:
- You’re building a new home, shop, barn, or shed
- You’re setting a manufactured home on raw land
- You’re pouring a slab for a garage, patio, or commercial structure
- You need a pad for equipment, a tank, or a storage area
- A builder or contractor has asked you to get the site ready before they arrive
How We Handle It
We start by walking the site, understanding the build plans if you have them, and looking at how the ground sits today. From there, the work usually involves stripping the topsoil where the pad will sit, cutting and filling to get the right elevation, grading the site so water moves away from where you’re building, and compacting and finishing so the surface is stable and ready.
We work closely with builders and contractors when needed, so the pad is exactly what they’re expecting when they show up. To be clear, our site prep service covers grading. We don’t pour concrete, install footings, or handle structural foundation work — but we get the ground ready so the people who do can roll right in.
Our Site Prep Process
Step 1 — Free Site Walk & Plan Review. Dawson walks the site and reviews your build plans if you have them, checking how the ground sits today against what needs to be built.
Step 2 — Topsoil Stripping: Topsoil gets stripped from where the pad will sit, since building on top of organic material leads to settling later.
Step 3 — Cut & Fill to Grade. Dirt gets cut and filled to bring the site to the correct elevation for your structure.
Step 4 — Grading for Drainage. The site is graded so water moves away from the building instead of toward it — one of the most common things that gets missed on rushed site prep.
Step 5 — Compaction & Handoff. The pad is compacted and finished, then handed off to your builder or contractor to the spec they gave us.
The USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service assesses soil suitability for construction site by site, since conditions can shift significantly within just a few miles — consistent with what we see grading pads across our own service area USDA NRCS — Georgia.
What You Get
- A flat, properly shaped pad ready for construction
- Drainage that moves water away from the build instead of toward it
- A clean handoff to your builder, contractor, or next step
Serving Meigs and the Surrounding Area for Site Prep
We do site prep across the Meigs, GA service area, including Camilla, Cairo, Moultrie, and Thomasville. South Georgia soil and weather both have their quirks, and we’ve built our process around what actually works around here.
Wright Way Land Management is based in Meigs and handles site prep across South Georgia, including Camilla, Pelham, and Cairo to the west, Boston and Coolidge to the south, Moultrie and Norman Park to the east, and Thomasville, Doerun, Climax, Ochlocknee, and Barwick throughout the rest of the surrounding area. Soil conditions shift block to block in this part of Georgia, from sandy ground that drains quickly to heavier clay that needs extra compaction, and both need to be handled differently before anything gets built on top. We check what we’re actually working with on every site rather than assuming one approach fits every South Georgia lot.

Services That Pair Well With Site Prep
Site prep is usually part of a sequence. Common pairings include:
- Land Clearing — clearing comes before grading for raw land builds.
- Dirt Work — fixing drainage and shaping the broader property.
- Stump Removal — for sites with leftover stumps.
- Gravel Driveway Building — once the site is set, you’ll need access to it.
Site Prep Cost FAQ
How much does site prep and grading cost per square foot?
Site preparation generally runs $1.50–$5.00 per square foot depending on scope, with grading specifically running $0.80–$2.00 per square foot — rough grading (removing slopes, contouring for drainage) tends toward $1–$2 per square foot, and fine finish grading toward $0.40–$1.00 per square foot. These are general market figures, not a Wright Way quote — topsoil condition, drainage needs, and how much cut-and-fill is required all change the number, which is why we give a free estimate after walking the site.
